In general, you can't rely on Russians to back off from their original positions on their own. It's not that they won't back down, they're not intractable, they want to make a deal. But you have to present it in a manner that allows them to make that step forward. When you come across situations like this, the thing to do is to sit down and explore where the person wants to go, what is the goal? What are you trying to accomplish? Are you trying to punish the other side? Or are you trying to make some money? Try to open the door that allows them to rethink their position, without them necessarily thinking that they were giving up anything.

Doing Business in Russia
Meetings should be confirmed at least a few days ahead of time, and if possible, again the day before. If anything unexpected occurs and you cannot make it to the meeting on time or at all, be sure to contact your business associate to let him or her know of the change. If it is too late to call that person, send a colleague from your home office with a message about your delay or cancellation.

Russia's version of relationship-focus does however differ from most other RF cultures in an important respect: verbal communication. Unlike East and Southeast Asians for example, Russian negotiators tend to be direct, even blunt, saying pretty much what they mean and meaning what they say.
This is contrast to the majority of relationship-focused cultures where people use indirect, high-context communication. The Russian combination of a RF approach to business with fairly direct, low-context communication behavior is somewhat of a rarity. Among the handful of other cultures exhibiting this feature are France, the Catalan region of Spain, parts of Chile, Venezuela and northern Mexico and parts of East/Central Europe.
