In Argentina, when you go into a bigger business you are dealing with people who are very well educated, very well travelled, and they are people who have money. Starting a business there is not an easy venture.
As in any other South American country, developing a relationship with your potential partner outside of business is important. In Argentina this process does not seem as difficult as it is in other countries. It is very much a networking situation. If you make the contact and you make the bond, then that person will lead you to other people. It is frequently a matter of simply having a nice dinner, or going to that person's country house. Participating in this and leaving business on the side until he brings it up is important when you are not in the office situation. This is one of the biggest mistakes that foreign business people make. In this country, you may be invited to someone's house because it is easier to discuss business there. That is not the way it works in Argentina. If you are invited somewhere outside of the office setting, it is really not expected that you talk business. Rather, it is expected of you to let this person get to know you, to create some kind of bond.

Business Customs and Protocol in Argentina
Because many Argentineans have European surnames and speak English well, Americans may assume their business counterparts are expatriates. In fact, they are Argentineans by three or four generations and are very proud of it.
People are addressed by their titles, be it engineer, architect, or Doctor. Unlike the US, lawyers expect to be addressed as Doctor. People use both their mother's and father's surnames and they are usually addressed by both. If you hear someone addressed only by one, it is the father's surname. In correspondence, always use both surnames and the recipient's title.
Describe your position and your professional degree very specifically.

Explain your business approach and your proposed method of operation. You must state clearly whether you will be personally involved in the continuing relationship or whether someone else will become the contact after you close the deal. If that latter is the case, that individual should be involved from the beginning of negotiations.
Discuss any plans you have for direct investment, be it now or later, and do not sell old technology or products without giving valid market reasons for doing so.
Always check references thoroughly.
